  1. Sakhalin is an island in the Pacific, North  
  2. of Japan, that since 1947, with the Kurils, 
  3. forms a region of Russia. The economy is 
  4. based on dairy farming, leguminous crops, 
  5. oats, barley, and sugar beet. In the milder 
  6. south, there is also timber, rice, wheat, 
  7. fish, some oil, and coal. The island was 
  8. settled by both Russians and Japanese from 
  9. the 17th century.
